Press and Information > Press Release Archive – April 13, 2001 AMBASSADOR PASCUAL TO PRESENT AWARDS TO UKRAINIAN TEACHERS FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING ENGLISH U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Carlos Pascual will present awards to Ukrainian secondary school teachers and administrators from central and northern oblasts who participated in a national competition for the U.S.-Ukraine Awards for Excellence in Teaching English and American Studies (TEA). The April 18 “TEA” award ceremony in Kyiv is one of five such events that will also take place in Dnipropetrovs’k, Kharkiv, L’viv and Odesa. More than 350 schools took part in this year’s TEA competition, which had a purse value of more than $160,000. The Teaching Excellence Awards program recognizes the finest Ukrainian teachers of English and American Studies for their leadership, professionalism, innovation, and for promoting and deepening U.S.-Ukrainian ties. Seventy-five winners from throughout Ukraine will receive individual awards worth $2,200 to purchase teaching materials and technical equipment. In addition, the 75 winners will take part in a follow-on TEA competition for 15 places in a six-week professional development course in the United States. The TEA Program is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Government and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. It is administered by the American Councils for International Education. The award ceremony will take place at 12:00 noon on April 18 at the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy, vul. Mel’nykova 63.
