In Western Ukraine, Ambassador Taylor Discusses U.S.-supported Projects
September 15, 2008
Ivano Frankivsk Governor Mykola Paliychuk presents Ambassador William Taylor with a book on Ivano Frankivsk during a meeting in the governor's office on September 15. The visit was the Ambassador's first trip to Ivano Frankivsk, and offered him the opportunity to speak with Governor Paliychuk about recent flooding in the oblast, and the status of the relief effort. The U.S. government has provided over $900,000 of humanitarian assistance to the oblast, and U.S. companies are making significant contributions to the relief effort.
Head of the Ivano Frankivsk Appellate Court, Pavlo Gvozdyk, and Appellate Court Judge Nadia Stefaniv demonstrate new witness protection equipment to Ambassador Taylor. The equipment, provided through a grant from the State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, allows witnesses in sensitive cases to give testimony without fear of their identity being compromised. Ivano Frankivsk is the first oblast in Ukraine to make use of this equipment, which marks an important step forward in the Ukrainian legal system's ability to provide witness protection.
