Remarks by
Ambassador William B. Taylor

after the wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks
in New York, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon

September 11, 2006

[In Ukrainian]: Dobry Den'!

[In English]: Five years ago today, nearly 3,000* people from 90 countries were murdered. They were murdered by terrorist extremists. Today, we and people around the world remember those people who were killed. We also remember that there were heroes that day, who saved the lives of many more who would have died, but for their heroism. Some of those heroes also died.

Unfortunately, the world has seen thousands of other people, innocent people, killed by extremist terrorists. These people have died in Bali, in Madrid, in London, in Beslan, in Dahab (Egypt), and Mumbai, just to name a few. The wreath that I lay here today on behalf of the people of the United States is for all the victims of terrorist extremists.

Just as the victims of terrorist extremists are from all countries of the world, all countries of the world have to fight this terrorist extremists movement.

Ukraine has helped in this fight. Ukraine immediately, on September 11, 2001, offered support to the United States in its fight against extremist terrorists in Afghanistan.

Ukraine contributed logistical support, ammunition, military support to the coalition that fought against the Taliban and defeated the Taliban in Afghanistan.

I ask you to join me in a moment of silence to remember the victims of terrorism around the world.
